Global Semiconductor Top 20 Reshuffling

According to the market research company IC Insights, due to the sales boom in the first half of 2013, the global top 20 semiconductor suppliers were reshuffled in sales revenue rankings.

The top four vendors that have increased their rankings are SK Hynix, Qualcomm, MediaTek and TSMC. Companies including Intel (Intel) and AMD, which depend primarily on the PC market, have seen a sharp decline. At the same time, although the second-ranking Samsung Electronics did not show strong growth, it continued to keep up with Intel, the world's largest chip maker.

In the first half of 2013, IC Insights ranked the world's top 20 semiconductor companies (including IC manufacturing, stand-alone components, and optoelectronics and sensor chips), including three TSMC, GlobalFoundries and UMC total wafer foundries. And four fabless IC design companies. In addition, eight of the top 20 semiconductor companies in the world are headquartered in the United States, four in Japan, three in Europe, three in Taiwan (Taiwan Semiconductor, MediaTek and UMC), and two South Korean companies.

In addition, other companies with rapidly rising rankings include Broadcom, the top 10 company, and Elpida, which was formally acquired by Micron on July 31, 2013. (The sales portfolio of Micron and Elpida will bring new sales revenue of US$6.7 billion to Micron-Elpida’s new company in the first half of 2013 and rank it to fifth.)

Companies that declined in the first half of 2013, including Fujitsu, not only fell 5 but also fell out of the top 20 list. Although Nvidia showed an annual sales growth of 2%, its ranking dropped from 18th in 2012 to 21. In addition, compared to a year ago, Japanese suppliers were more affected by the stronger yen.

Overall, sales of the top 20 semiconductor companies in the first half of 2013 increased by 4% compared to the first half of 2012, which is 1% more than the 3% annual growth rate of the overall global semiconductor market in the first half of 2013.
