21ic News Texas Instruments (TI) today announced two new devices that help tablet designers simplify their designs. The TCA8424 is the industry's first Human Interface Device (HID) with an I2C 128-key keyboard controller that eliminates the need to program the device during production, simplifying design and speeding time-to-market. This keyboard controller provides a low-cost, seamless solution for connecting to a keyboard for Windows® 8-based systems. The SN65DSI85 is a digital component serial interface (DSI) for FlatLinkTM interface ICs that helps designers connect graphics processors and LCD panels at lower cost. The SN65DSI85 supports resolutions up to 2560 × 1600p on tablets, netbooks and mobile internet devices.

Key features and benefits of the TCA8424:

· Extended keyboard support: Up to 128 (8 × 16) key scans, not only support standard keyboards, but also support more custom buttons such as volume control, brightness control, forward/backward/stop/playback/home. Competing keyboard controllers only support 80 keys;

· Unique sync button detection: Fixed length 8-byte input report is TI's unique technology that can detect up to 14 buttons (including modifiers) and press simultaneously, allowing the terminal device to be used in games and other applications;

· Hardware-coded HID and REPORT descriptors: Software can be easily integrated into the system, simplifying design and speeding time-to-market.

Key features and benefits of the SN65DSI85:

· Optimized MIPI® DSI interface: Dual-link 18/24bpp FlatLink's dual quad MIPI® DSI port, compatible with a wide range of graphics processors supporting WQXGA (2500 × 1600p) resolutions up to 60 frames per second;

· Smallest package size: The 5mm x 5mm PBGA package is 20% smaller than competing devices, saving PCB area for space-constrained mobile applications;

· Higher video bandwidth support: LVDS pixel clocks operate at up to 154 MHz, which is 20% higher than competing products. Each DSI channel operates at 1 Gbps and delivers 8 Gbps of maximum input bandwidth to support industry-leading data throughput.

Tools and support

The TCA8424EVM demonstrates the features and benefits of the TCA8424 in keyboard scanner applications and is now available for ordering. The IBIS model and user guide are also available for synchronization.

In addition, TI offers a variety of tools and support to accelerate the development of the SN65DSI85, including IBIS and HSPICE models, DSI tuner software, hardware implementation guides, and video configuration guides and configuration tool software user manuals.

The interface product forum for the TI E2ETM community provides engineers with powerful technical support where they can ask TI experts questions.

Availability and packaging

The TCA8424 is available now in a 6 mm × 6 mm × 1 mm 40-pin VQFN package. Also available in parallel is the SN65DSI85 in a 5 mm × 5 mm × 1 mm, 64-bump PBGA package.
