Asphalt Adhesion Test Method
The asphalt adhesion test is a standard procedure used to evaluate the bonding strength between asphalt and the underlying surface. This method ensures that the adhesive properties of the materials meet required specifications, especially in construction and road maintenance applications.
General Operating Procedure
The process begins with preparing a veneer brick or standard block that matches the sample specifications. The instrument used for this test is designed to measure cohesive force, ensuring accurate results. It's important that all tools and materials used during the test are of appropriate quality and meet the following requirements:
- Standard Block Size: Must be the same as the sample being tested.
- Vernier Caliper: Should have a precision of 0.02mm for accurate measurements.
- Handheld Dicing Saw: Use a resin safety blade with dimensions of 150×2.7×1.9 mm.
- Epoxy Adhesive: Use model 914 fast binder. The bond strength should be at least 3.0 kPa when dry.
- Tape: Used to secure joints and ensure stability during the curing process.
Joint Preparation Requirements
To ensure proper adhesion, the following steps must be followed:
- Make cuts 2d to 3d before conducting the bond strength test.
- Ensure that breaks are cut from concrete and waterproof membrane down to the substrate surface, maintaining consistent depth.
- The cutting size for both concrete and waterproof membrane should match the standard block size.
Standard Block Preparation
The standard block must be prepared carefully to ensure accurate results:
- Clean the standard block and remove any contaminants from the waterproof sheet before bonding.
- Ensure the adhesive is mixed evenly and applied without excessive thickness.
- When pasting the standard block, avoid staining adjacent concrete or waterproofing membranes.
- Secure the block with cross-shaped tape after application.
- Allow sufficient curing time based on ambient temperature:
- If the temperature is above 15°C, cure for at least 24 hours.
- If the temperature is between 5°C and 15°C, cure for at least 48 hours.
- If the temperature is below 5°C, cure for at least 72 hours.
- Do not expose the block to water during the curing period.
- If the temperature is below 5°C, preheat the block to 70–80°C before applying the adhesive.
The standard block is attached as shown in Figure 4-1. Proper execution of these steps ensures reliable adhesion testing results, which are crucial for assessing the performance of asphalt materials in real-world conditions.
