Asphalt Adhesion Test Method

The general procedure for conducting an asphalt adhesion test involves several key steps. First, a veneer brick is prepared to create a standard block for testing. The instrument used in this process is designed to measure cohesive force. Before starting the test, it's essential to ensure that all tools and materials meet specific requirements.

  • Standard Block Size: It should match the dimensions of the sample being tested.
  • Vernier Caliper: Must have a precision of 0.02mm.
  • Handheld Dicing Saw: Use a resin safety blade with dimensions of 150×27×1.9 mm.
  • Epoxy Adhesive: Choose model 914, which has a bond strength of 3.0 kPa when dry.
  • Tape: Used to secure joints, ensuring proper alignment and stability.

For the bonding process, the following guidelines must be followed:

  • Cut the samples 2d to 3d before the adhesion test begins.
  • Ensure that the cuts extend from the concrete surface down to the waterproof layer, maintaining consistent depth.
  • The size of the cut should match the standard block dimensions.

The standard block must also meet certain conditions:

  • Clean both the standard block and the waterproof sheet before applying the adhesive.
  • Mix the binder thoroughly, avoiding excessive dryness or wetness.
  • When attaching the block, make sure the adhesive does not stain nearby surfaces like concrete or the waterproof membrane.
  • Secure the block with tape in a cross shape after application.
  • Allow sufficient curing time depending on ambient temperature:
    • If the temperature is above 15°C, cure for at least 24 hours.
    • If between 5°C and 15°C, cure for at least 48 hours.
    • If below 5°C, cure for at least 72 hours.
  • Avoid exposing the block to water during the curing period.
  • If the temperature is below 5°C, preheat the block to 70–80°C before applying the adhesive.

The standard block is attached as shown in Figure 4-1, ensuring correct positioning and alignment for accurate results.
