New RFSoC devices reduce power consumption and package size by 50-75%, essential for efficient deployment of 5G Massive-MIMO radios and millimeter-wave wireless backhaul

Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced disruptive integration and architecture for 5G wireless by integrating radio frequency (RF)-level analog technology into its 16nm All Programmable MPSoC breakthrough. Xilinx's new All Programmable RFSoC eliminates discrete data converters that reduce power consumption and package size by 5-75% for 5GMassive-MIMO and millimeter-wave wireless backhaul applications.

Large-scale 2D antenna array systems are critical to improving the spectral efficiency and network density required for 5G. Manufacturers are looking for new ways to meet stringent commercial deployment requirements. Because the All Programmable SoC integrates high-performance ADCs and DACs, radio and wireless backhaul units can now meet previously unattainable power and package size requirements while increasing channel density. In addition, RFSoC devices are highly flexible, enabling manufacturers to simplify design and development cycles to meet the 5G deployment timeline.

Integrated 16nm RF data conversion technology includes:
Direct RF sampling simplifies analog design, increases accuracy, reduces package size, and reduces power consumption.
The 12-bit ADC supports up to 4GSPS, achieving a high number of channels and supporting digital down conversion.
The 14-bit DAC supports up to 6.4 GSPS, achieving high channel count and supporting digital up-conversion.

Boris Murmann, a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University, said: "The conversion to FinFET technology has resulted in high integration densities by improving the performance characteristics of analog devices, making it possible to integrate state-of-the-art analog RF macrocells with digitally assisted analog design methods."

"Xilinx's RFSoC solution is the RRU / Mass Changer for the massive MIMO active antenna array market," said Earl Lum, president of EJL Wireless Research, "it makes this company the current and next generation 4G, 4.5G And the preferred digital solution provider for 5G wireless networks."

Liam Madden, vice president of FPGA development and chip technology at Xilinx, said: "The integration of RF signal processing in the All Programmable SoC allows our customers to dramatically change their system architecture. At the same time, it can continue to advance Xilinx's integration. Continuous breakthrough. This will effectively help our 5G customers to commercialize highly differentiated, large-scale Massive-MIMO systems and millimeter-wave backhaul systems. Our new RFSoC architecture came into being at the right time to solve 5G. One of the pressing issues in wireless development."
