According to Reuters in Japanese Yomiuri Shimbun (The Yomiuri Shimbun) reported that Japanese researchers, legislators and the business community are hoping to take advantage of the deep sea near the coast of Japan in the rare earth metals to produce LED products, and used in Japan in 2020 and the Olympic Games Disabled at the Olympics.

Rare earth metals are highly concentrated in the outer seas of Minami Torishima, the easternmost part of Japan's Ogasawara Islands. The rare earths in the seabed 5,000 meters deep outside the sea are expected to be sufficient for 200 years in Japan.

Yasuhiro Kato, a professor at the University of Tokyo in Japan, and his research team succeeded in extracting Yttrium and cerium from rare earth metals in the outer sea of South Bird Island for use as LED luminescent materials.

Several Liberal Democrats have proposed to the government that they can apply these LEDs to the Japanese Olympics, and the government is considering commercializing the LEDs for use in Olympic venues to showcase Japan's rich marine resources.

If the rare earth can be extracted on the seabed in the outer sea, it can be widely used in electric vehicles, batteries and wind energy in addition to LED luminescent materials. However, at this stage, because of the difficulty in deep sea operations, the rare earth metals that can be extracted are still limited.

One technique is to place a compressed air tube on the seabed and extract the rare earth metal using the buoyancy principle. There are about 30 companies and institutions that have invested in this technology, including Toyota Motor, Mitsui Shipbuilding, and the University of Tokyo. He formed an alliance and tried to apply for funding from the Japanese government to invest in a large amount of research on rare earth metal refining technology.
