As home routers evolve, they are becoming more powerful and capable of handling multiple frequency bands. Currently, over half of existing Wi-Fi routers support dual-band operation. In the future, we may see three-band, four-band, or even five-band routers, offering better performance and reduced interference. In 2007 and 2009, it became clear that the 2.4 GHz band had limited bandwidth—less than 100 MHz—which made it difficult to increase data rates significantly. This led to the development of the IEEE 802.11ac standard, introduced around 2012. It primarily used the 5 GHz band, which provided more available spectrum and allowed for higher speeds. The 5 GHz band offers hundreds of MHz of spectrum resources, making it ideal for high-speed data transmission. Additionally, regulatory bodies like the US FCC have been opening up new portions of the 5 GHz spectrum, encouraging other countries to follow suit. As a result, the global availability of 5 GHz has improved, and the Wi-Fi Alliance began focusing on this band from 2012 onward. By 2015, over half of new Wi-Fi products supported 5 GHz, marking the rise of dual-band devices. In 2013, the Wi-Fi Alliance also took over the WiGig Alliance, which was working on the IEEE 802.11ad standard operating at 60 GHz. This new band is also a global ISM band, but due to its high frequency, it has limited range and can't penetrate walls easily. However, it excels in short-range, high-speed data transfer, such as streaming HD video. With the addition of 60 GHz, Wi-Fi officially became a tri-band technology. Another important development came with the IEEE 802.11ah standard, which operates at 915 MHz (sub-1 GHz). This standard, known as Wi-Fi HaLow, is designed for low-power, long-range IoT applications. It was officially named in January 2016 and offers low-rate, high-coverage communication. Although it's still in early stages, it shows Wi-Fi’s potential to expand into new markets. Adding 915 MHz makes Wi-Fi a quad-band system, but this frequency isn’t globally standardized. Different countries use it differently, and the available bandwidth varies. Despite this, the trend continues: Wi-Fi keeps expanding into new spectrum bands. However, there are challenges. LTE networks are increasingly using the 5 GHz band, leading to potential interference between Wi-Fi and LTE. In 2015, this caused tension between the two camps, with debates over fairness and coexistence mechanisms. While LTE proposed solutions, Wi-Fi advocates felt their rights were being compromised. Under the leadership of the US FCC, Wi-Fi found another opportunity with the 3.5 GHz band. Part of this band is now allocated for unlicensed use, giving Wi-Fi a chance to grow alongside LTE, which uses the licensed portion. In summary, Wi-Fi has expanded to include 915 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 5 GHz, and 60 GHz. Future standards like 802.11ax (for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and 802.11ay (for 60 GHz) will continue to push performance forward. The 915 MHz band is still developing, and 3.5 GHz may be included in future updates. The Wi-Fi Alliance has been slow in certifying new technologies. For example, WiGig certification was delayed until 2016, and Wi-Fi HaLow was expected to launch in 2018. New standards typically take about four to five years to roll out. The 802.11ax draft, for instance, was expected in 2016 but might be pushed to 2017. Beyond just expanding frequency bands, Wi-Fi is also looking for new applications. High-definition video streaming, IoT, and indoor positioning are all areas of interest. In 2015, the Wi-Fi Alliance introduced Wi-Fi Aware, a feature similar to Bluetooth, enabling location-based services and device discovery. Looking ahead, home routers will become more advanced, supporting multiple frequency bands. These devices will handle everything from mobile internet access to video streaming and IoT connectivity. However, multi-band support may come at a cost—newer models like Google’s OnHub, launched in 2015, already cost $200, far above the typical $50-$100 range. Multi-band capabilities could become a key selling point, but they might also lead to higher prices.
