On the afternoon of January 16, the Alibaba Group Silk Road headquarters was officially launched in Xi'an, marking a significant step forward in the company's efforts to support the "Belt and Road" initiative. Alongside this, the Rookies (Alibaba's logistics arm) signed a strategic partnership with Xi'an, aiming to establish a smart logistics hub in the northwest region. This center will integrate cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, revolutionizing the way goods are stored and transported across the region. The collaboration involves a major investment of 1 billion yuan in Luohe New City, where a high-tech logistics center will be built. The facility will feature fully automated assembly lines, AGV robots, and robotic arms, all designed to enhance efficiency and speed in logistics operations. Construction is set to begin in 2018, with the center expected to be operational before the Tmall Double 11 shopping festival in 2019. This project follows the previous development of a logistics center in Jidong New City, which was launched in September 2016 and is scheduled to start operations in March of this year. The expansion into new areas highlights the growing importance of logistics infrastructure in supporting e-commerce growth across China. Wan Lin, President of Rookies, emphasized that smart logistics is about inclusivity and accessibility. “Our mission is to ensure 24-hour delivery across the country,” he said. “It’s not about handling millions of packages daily, but about making sure that most of them can be delivered efficiently.” Achieving this goal requires continuous improvements in logistics networks, infrastructure, and the widespread adoption of advanced technologies. Currently, Tmall and Rookies have introduced “instant-what-you-get” logistics experiences, including 30-minute, 1-hour, and 2-hour delivery services, powered by intelligent algorithms. These innovations have already been implemented in provinces like Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Hubei. With the new logistics center in Xi'an, these same smart technologies will now extend to the northwest, enhancing the speed and reliability of deliveries in the region. As the logistics landscape continues to evolve, the integration of AI and automation is becoming essential for meeting the rising demands of online shoppers. The new facilities in Xi'an are a clear indication of Alibaba's long-term vision to build a more connected, efficient, and technologically advanced logistics network across China.
