On November 30, 2017, the Shanghai Jinqiao AVR Industry Promotion Conference took place in Chengdu, China, marking a significant milestone for the region’s growing virtual reality (VR) sector. The event, themed “Hug the Golden Bridge and Win the Future Together,” brought together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to explore the future of augmented and virtual reality. The conference was organized by several key entities, including the China Network Audiovisual Program Service Association, the Jinqiao Authority under the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Management Committee, the Shanghai Jinqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone Management Committee, and leading companies such as Shanghai Jinqiao (Group) Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Jinqiao Export Processing Zone Development Co., Ltd. It was sponsored by the Shanghai Digital Content Industry Promotion Center, with additional support from MIDI Video Technology, CCTV Media, Zhongke Xinsong, and Shanghai Haojing Technology. According to Greenlight Insights, the global VR market reached $7.2 billion in 2017 and is projected to hit $74.8 billion by 2021. China has emerged as the second-largest hub for VR companies worldwide, with startups in both China and the U.S. capturing approximately 20% and 60% of global investment, respectively. As a pioneer in reform and opening up, Shanghai’s AVR industry holds about 25% of the national market, with Pudong New Area leveraging the China (Shanghai) Free Trade Experimental Zone to establish itself as a key player. Jinqiao, one of the four original state-level development zones in Pudong, has been on a dynamic journey for nearly 30 years. With the rise of the AVR industry, it continues to build on its legacy, embracing new technologies and opportunities. During the conference, Wang Jing, Deputy Head of Pudong New Area, delivered a speech highlighting the importance of Jinqiao’s role in advancing the AVR industry. He expressed strong confidence in its potential to drive innovation and growth. Ni Weihua, General Manager of the Jinqiao Stock Industry Construction Operations Department, shared insights into Jinqiao’s past achievements and future vision. He emphasized that the VR industry would become a major growth driver for the area, aiming to attract more high-quality AVR companies. Hu Yi, Deputy General Manager of MIDI Video, discussed the company’s accomplishments and future plans in VR, aligning with China Mobile’s “big connection” strategy. Xu Nan, Director of Planning and Development at Zhongke Xinsong, explored the convergence of VR and artificial intelligence, predicting that their integration would shape the next era of robotics. Ling Meixing, Secretary General of the Global Virtual Reality Congress, highlighted the importance of a strong industrial ecosystem in driving the growth of the AVR sector. He shared valuable insights based on his experience with the GVRC. In addition, the Shanghai Jinqiao AVR Industry Support Ceremony was successfully held. Attendees included Wang Jing, Zhou Jie, and other officials who pressed handprints to symbolize their commitment to the industry’s future. Since its establishment in 1990, Jinqiao Import and Export Processing Zone has achieved remarkable success over 27 years. As the AVR industry gains momentum, Jinqiao continues to leverage existing resources and embrace cutting-edge technologies like 5G and VR. The zone is also working to create a supportive environment for the industry, including improved business operations, comprehensive services, and favorable policies.
