British startup Blippar has long been at the forefront of augmented reality innovation. The company has developed a range of AR tools and applications, including the self-service AR development platform Blipparbuilder, the visual exploration app Blipparsphere, and various AR marketing solutions tailored for specific campaigns. Now, Blippar is pushing the boundaries once again with a new AR navigation app called AR City.

Currently in beta, AR City leverages Apple Maps as its base and integrates GPS and mobile Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) through a custom ARCL library to deliver an immersive AR navigation experience. The VIO technology is powered by Apple’s ARKit, while GPS location data is handled via Apple’s Core Location framework, which is part of the iOS SDK. This combination allows for more accurate and seamless real-world navigation using augmented reality.

The app currently supports AR navigation in over 300 cities worldwide. Key features include real-time road information displayed in an AR environment, detailed location highlights such as nearby attractions, and urban visual positioning. For example, when users point their phone camera at a building, it can display the building's name. However, this visual positioning feature is only available in central London, San Francisco, and Mountain View, USA, at the moment.

While AR City is still in its early stages, it shows great potential. The team behind Blippar is continuously working on refining the app, adding more cities, improving accuracy, and expanding the range of features. As AR technology continues to evolve, apps like AR City could play a major role in how we interact with the physical world around us. With time, this beta version might become a powerful tool for everyday navigation and exploration.
