In the third quarter of 2017, the global wearable device market saw a shipment of 26.3 million units, showing a 7.3% increase compared to the same period in 2016. While Xiaomi and Fitbit remained at the top, Samsung failed to make it into the top five for the second consecutive quarter. Huawei's market share dropped slightly to 4.9%, while Xiaomi and Fitbit shared the lead. According to IDC data, Xiaomi had previously taken over from Fitbit as the leading brand in the first quarter of 2017. In the second quarter, Xiaomi maintained its position, and although Fitbit made some progress in the third quarter, it still couldn’t surpass Xiaomi. Both companies ended up tied for first place. Before this year, Fitbit was the clear leader in the market. The market is evolving rapidly, with different strategies among brands. Xiaomi has been taking a diversified approach, introducing products like smart shoes, while its shipments are mainly concentrated in China. Meanwhile, Fitbit’s market share fell from 21.9% to 13.7%, and its shipments declined by 1.8 million units. The company is still transitioning, having launched its first smartwatch, but its performance continues to decline for the fourth quarter in a row. Apple, on the other hand, saw a 3.0 percentage point increase in market share, driven by the success of the Apple Watch Series 1, 2, and 3. These models helped maintain steady growth in the market, showing that there is still consumer interest in wearable devices that offer more than just basic fitness tracking. Huawei improved its position, increasing its share by 3.5 percentage points to 6.0%, while Garmin saw a slight drop, falling to 4.9%. IDC researcher Ramon Llamas noted in the report that the wearable market is moving toward more multifunctional devices. While basic wearables like Fitbit, Xiaomi, and Huawei laid the foundation, consumers are now looking for more advanced features, such as those offered by Apple, Fossil, and Samsung. This shift means manufacturers must adapt quickly to stay relevant and capture user attention. Overall, the wearable market is still relatively small, and many vendors are in a testing phase. They are offering a wide range of products, from fashion accessories to smartphone alternatives. Behind these devices, a lot of data is collected, which highlights the huge potential of wearables. However, this also makes consumers cautious about adopting new technologies.
