[PConline News] AMD's Ryzen processors have performed impressively, and the product lineup is largely in place. Now, many users are eagerly waiting for the next generation of APUs. This new release will bring a cutting-edge process, an updated CPU architecture, and a fresh GPU design. According to AMD, the next-gen APU is expected to launch in the fourth quarter, featuring the Zen architecture in the CPU.
According to the latest leaked roadmap, the next-generation APU, Raven Ridge, is primarily scheduled for 2018. It features up to 4 cores and 8 threads based on the Zen CPU architecture, along with 11 computing units containing 704 stream processors powered by Vega GPUs. The desktop version continues to use the AM4 interface. An upgraded version called Picasso is expected in 2019, maintaining similar architecture and specs but focusing on improved power efficiency while still using the AM4 socket.
A recently surfaced AMD official slide suggests that the company is preparing a new generation of APUs for business laptops. Both the Zen and Vega architectures will be integrated into the same chip, with a strong emphasis on extended battery life. This seems like a significant step forward for mobile computing.
The Ryzen 5 Pro Mobile series was also featured on the slides. In benchmarks, it outperformed the Kaby Lake Core i5 significantly, far surpassing the seventh-generation APU A12. This indicates a likely 4-core, 8-thread configuration. The 3DMark 11 performance was better than the A12, suggesting around 512 stream processors—192 fewer than the desktop version, probably to manage power consumption more effectively. Still, the performance spike is impressive. Additionally, the idle power consumption is much lower than the A12, nearly matching that of the i5.
AMD had previously confirmed that the mobile Ryzen Pro would launch in the first half of 2018, but some Lenovo ThinkPad models, such as the A475 and A275, are expected to ship earlier this year with these advanced chips.
