According to recent reports from international media, Osram has made significant progress in the field of smart automotive technology. The company has developed a revolutionary hybrid LED with an impressive resolution of 1024 pixels, offering individual pixel control. This advancement allows for dynamic shaping of the light beam, ensuring optimal visibility for drivers while preventing glare from oncoming vehicles.
This cutting-edge technology represents a major leap forward in smart car lighting. With Osram's innovative approach, headlights can now adapt in real time to different driving conditions, making night-time driving safer and more comfortable. The development is part of the AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System) research project, led by Osram Opto Semiconductors since late 2016.
The Eviyos prototype matrix LED integrates both the light-emitting chip and pixel-level control electronics into one compact unit. This design enables high-resolution illumination that can be customized based on specific vehicle requirements. Users have the flexibility to combine these hybrid LEDs with traditional ones, depending on the application.
Each pixel operates at a low current of 11 mA, producing a minimum luminous intensity of 3 lumens. What’s more, the system can create a soft, diffused lighting effect. By activating only the necessary light points within a set timeframe, the system maintains efficiency without compromising performance. Compared to conventional systems where all pixels are constantly on, this method significantly improves energy savings.
Additionally, the use of a liquid crystal (LC) intermediate layer allows for precise optical activation or deactivation of individual pixels. This level of control not only enhances energy efficiency but also opens up new possibilities for intelligent lighting solutions.
Osram first explored the idea of controllable multi-pixel light sources as early as 2010. The company aims to build a comprehensive product ecosystem with various functions. Beyond automotive applications, this technology could find its way into other industries where smart lighting and targeted illumination are essential.
As the automotive industry moves toward greater automation and connectivity, Osram's advancements in smart lighting are setting new standards. With continuous innovation, the future of driving may soon be illuminated in ways we've never seen before.
