In the past decade, starting from 2009, I have been heavily involved in developing high-power wireless access points (APs) based on the IEEE 802.11n standard. Over the years, I've had several successful projects, which gave me hands-on experience with RF power amplifiers used in Wi-Fi products. Recently, I took the time to compile and organize the key high-power RF power amplifier components commonly used in Wi-Fi devices, making it easier for future development projects to quickly identify the right power devices.
Among the many analog device manufacturers, Skyworks, RFMD, SiGe, SST, and Microsemi stand out for their strong performance and competitive pricing. This article will focus on five high-power microwave devices from these companies, highlighting their strengths and applications.
Skyworks is a leading supplier of wireless communications semiconductors, specializing in RF and complete communication systems for mobile applications. They provide front-end modules, RF subsystems, and mobile system solutions to handset, wireless networking, and infrastructure customers. Based in Woburn, Massachusetts, Skyworks has offices in Irvine, California, and operates design, engineering, manufacturing, and marketing teams across North America, Europe, Japan, and Asia-Pacific.
RFMD is a world-renowned provider of high-performance wireless systems and application solutions for mobile communications. Their power amplifiers, transmitters, cellular transceivers, and system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions support global mobility, enhanced connectivity, and advanced features in mobile phones, base stations, WLANs, and GPS systems.
SiGe Semiconductor is a global leader in RF solutions for GPS, Bluetooth, WiMAX, and Wireless LAN. Headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, with R&D operations in Cambridge, England, the company was originally part of the Canadian National Research Council before becoming an independent entity focused on RF product development.
SST is a leader in flash memory technology, offering a wide range of non-volatile memory solutions using its ultra-fast flash technology. Their products are widely used in digital consumer electronics, networking, wireless communications, and network computing. SST provides high-performance flash memory, high-capacity flash products, and integrated single-chip flash microcontrollers.
Microsemi is a global supplier of power management, RF/microwave semiconductor devices, and transient suppression solutions. Their reliable analog ICs and discrete semiconductors are used in critical applications such as satellite communications, telecommunications, military/aerospace, medical, and industrial markets.
