The City University of Hong Kong launched the "Green Light Campaign" on the 18th, launching the "Lighting Management System" developed by the school to reduce the power consumption of up to 40% of lighting devices.

The "Lighting Management System" was awarded the Machine and Mechanical Tools Design Category Award in the "2009 Hong Kong Business Awards" hosted by the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong.

Zhong Shuhong, the developer of the system and deputy dean of the City University of Science and Engineering, said that the system can generally save 20% to 30% of electricity consumption, and in some cases up to 40%. This system has been adopted by more and more Hong Kong public housing estates as well as private residential and commercial buildings in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, the Philippines and Australia.

According to reports, a Hong Kong public housing estate that has used the system saves an average of 120,000 kWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to 90 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. To absorb 90 tons of carbon emissions, 464 trees are needed; and for each kilowatt hour of electricity, the annual electricity cost can be reduced by 120,000 Hong Kong dollars.

Ye Haosheng, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the City University and Dean of the Acting Graduate School, said that the school will guide young people to practice environmental protection in their daily lives through the "Green Light Campaign" and cultivate their responsibility to society and humanity.
