MediaTek has recently introduced an entry-level 4G smartphone platform, and Dr. Li Yanji, Director of Product Planning at MediaTek's Wireless Communications Division, explained the key reasons behind this move. According to him, there are three main factors driving this initiative. First, in many emerging markets, the shift from 2G/3G or basic feature phones to 4G smartphones is still in its early stages, presenting a huge growth opportunity. Second, in some regions, 2G networks are being phased out, requiring dual-SIM support for 4G and new features introduced by local operators. Third, users are increasingly expecting a better experience even from budget devices. To address these needs, MediaTek has partnered closely with Google, becoming the first system-on-chip (SoC) partner for the GMS Express solution. This collaboration provides device manufacturers with proven Android software solutions, including Google Mobile Services (GMS) and Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) certification. By offering pre-certified and compatibility-tested Android software and mobile services, MediaTek helps manufacturers bring products to market faster and more cost-effectively, ensuring a consistent and high-quality user experience. This partnership plays a crucial role in helping Chinese smartphone manufacturers expand into overseas markets. With the domestic market slowing down, many smaller companies are looking to international markets. However, they often face challenges such as pre-installing Google Mobile Services, managing frequent Android updates and security patches, and dealing with complex export configurations and software maintenance. Dr. Li Yanji emphasized that the GMS Express program not only accelerates product launches but also ensures a consistent and high-quality consumer experience through various Android apps and devices. Thanks to this program, MediaTek provides manufacturers with pre-tested, pre-certified, and fully compatible Android software and Google Mobile Services. Additionally, it reduces the time required for compatibility verification with Google from three months to just four weeks, and allows manufacturers to receive security update patches quickly, minimizing the risk of vulnerabilities. MediaTek has also launched a new entry-level 4G smartphone chip called MT6739, designed specifically for the budget segment. One of its standout features is support for an 18:9 HD+ display, making full-screen phones more affordable. The MT6739 is built on a mature 28nm process, featuring a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU running at 1.5GHz, a PowerVR GE8100 GPU at 570MHz, and support for 3GB LPDDR3 memory and eMMC 5.1 storage. It also supports 150Mbps download speeds (Cat.4) and 50Mbps upload speeds (Cat.5), along with dual-SIM VoLTE and dual-standby capabilities. The chip also includes support for eMBMS, HPUE network, and the new 600MHz frequency band in North America, aligning with the ongoing transition away from 2G networks. Looking ahead, MediaTek’s Helio P series will be the company’s main focus in the mid-to-high-end market. Analysts expect the Helio P40 to launch in the first half of next year. In addition, MediaTek is already investing in cutting-edge areas like 5G and AI, positioning itself for future growth in the evolving smartphone landscape.
