Long ago, OLED was considered by the industry as the next generation of display technology. However, the reality is cruel, and OLED has not developed rapidly as everyone expected. However, with the continuous improvement of display technology and the active participation of enterprises, the enthusiasm of companies for investing in OLEDs has increased in recent years, and 2013 is likely to become the first year of OLED market.

Reproduce the LCD development model OLED application in the market began slowly in 2000. By 2004, PM-OLED began large-scale mass production. The products were applied to MP3 players and mobile phone sub-panels. At that time, the market was bright and the industry looked forward to OLEDs continuing the development of LCDs.

The development of LCD is also started from a small-sized screen. Initially, with the breakthrough of process technology, the progress of LCD production lines has progressed from the second generation line to the fifth generation line. Subsequently, the LCD production line realized a generational jump almost every two years.

Initially, LCDs were used only for computer products such as computer monitors and notebook computers due to their longevity. With the launch of the LCD 7 line, the product gradually penetrated into television and entered the home appliance market. The production of LCDs from small-scale production to large-scale mass production took only a short period of time of less than two years, and the products have been fully expanded, and it took less than a decade. At present, almost every year, the sales volume of various types of LCDs reaches 200 million units.

OLED began to be used in small-sized products in 2004, and people in the industry generally believe that the OLED era is approaching. At this time, some manufacturers of OLED panels in volume production, in 2006 AUO officially mass production of AM-OLED, successfully introduced into the mobile phone products, but six months later, AUO could not bear the pressure of AM-OLED loss, announced the suspension of production. In 2007, Chi Mei, a subsidiary of Chi Mei Opto-Electronics AM-OLED, successfully produced larger-sized products and applied it to the digital photo frame field. During this period, Samsung's SMD company specializing in OLED production also introduced OLEDs for mobile phones. At the end of 2007, Sony officially sold OLED TVs and once again announced that the OLED era is approaching. However, in 2008, under the influence of the financial turmoil, major manufacturers' progress in the development of AM-OLEDs slowed down, but they continued to study. In 2009, SMD once again applied AM-OLED to mobile phones, but the market was still not recognized at that time.

In late 2010, SMD applied AM-OLED to Samsung and HTC smartphones. In 2011, SMD continued to develop AM-OLED panels for smartphone applications. In the second half of 2011, Nokia, Motorola, HTC, and LG each launched one or two mobile phones using AM-OLED screens, which made the AM-OLED market even more exciting.

In addition, Samsung's recent launch of the Galaxy Tab's second-generation product also uses AM-OLED as the screen, measuring 10.1 inches. This shows that AM-OLED has stepped into the field of tablet PCs and its application has gradually expanded. At CES 2012, LG also demonstrated a 55-inch AM-OLED TV, which is expected to be produced in the second half of 2012. It can be imagined that, with the active input of manufacturers in 2012, AM-OLED prices will gradually decline, and the accessories will also be applied to a wide variety of products.

In the future, OLEDs can be used on flexible displays in addition to traditional products. Because the product can be rolled up, it is more convenient to carry, and the screen size will be unbounded. There will be a large number of innovative application products at that time, and this era of digital homes is just around the corner.

OLED is promising in the future. Except for SMD, almost no other manufacturers mass-produce AM-OLEDs. Now the largest production line is the 5.5-generation line, which was mass-produced in the second quarter of 2011. AU Optronics and LG Display originally announced in early 2011 that there will be a mass production of AM-OLED production lines each year in mid-2011, which are currently postponed until 2012.
