On the 20th, Anhui Provincial Hospital launched the country’s first artificial intelligence diagnosis and treatment platform. Among its highlights is the intelligent robot “Xiao Medicine,†developed by Keda Xunfei, which plays a key role in this platform.
“Hello, which department should I see if my neck feels uncomfortable?†asked a visitor. “Please head to the orthopedics clinic,†replied the elegant robot “Xiao Medicine,†swiftly displaying the location of the orthopedic clinic on a 3D map.
Since its introduction in June this year, “Xiao Medicine†has been diligently studying 53 medical textbooks—equivalent to the entire medical curriculum doctors need to master—as well as extensive additional data. Dr. Xu Geliang, the dean of Anhui Provincial Hospital, noted that “Xiao Medicine†currently supports scheduling in 47 departments, provides 618 location navigations, and answers 260 common medical queries. Since its launch, it has handled over 4,905 inquiries, with its answer accuracy rising from 81% to 90.81%.
Dr. Xu also mentioned plans to introduce 10 more “Medical Doctors†to accelerate “her†learning process and enhance her intelligence. Another standout feature of the platform is its application of artificial intelligence in diagnosing lung CT images. Over the past year, this AI system has helped doctors analyze around 11,000 lung CT scans by studying 680,000 images, achieving a diagnostic accuracy of 94%.
“With vast amounts of medical imaging data and fatigue setting in during long shifts, there's always a risk of oversight,†explained Liu Qingfeng, chairman of Keda Xunfei. “AI never tires, and its precision matches that of top-tier hospitals.â€
This AI clinic will also benefit smaller hospitals. By connecting with Anhui Medical Imaging Cloud and the provincial hospital teleconsultation platform, 41 county-level hospitals in Anhui can now access AI-assisted quality checks for chest CTs and mammograms. During the initial phase, the platform conducted quality checks on about 1.5 million chest CT images of over 10,000 patients, offering more than 500 quality inspection suggestions.
“The intelligence and service capabilities of the platform will continue to grow, and its applications will expand,†added Dr. Xu Geliang. The platform has already processed 20,000 mammography images and approximately 200,000 brain MRI datasets, showing promise in diagnosing breast cancer and researching Alzheimer’s disease.
Collaborating with Keda Xunfei, the hospital has also integrated AI voice technology into daily practices like ward rounds and ultrasound exams. Previously requiring tens of minutes or even hours of data entry can now be completed orally. Doctors can now use the “Cloud Medical Sound†app to monitor patient records anytime, anywhere, and quickly adjust treatment plans. Currently, close to 1,000 doctors in the hospital use the app daily.
“The beauty of AI lies in its ability to handle repetitive tasks efficiently, significantly reducing human workload while enhancing collaboration,†said Jin Xiaotao, deputy director of the National Health Commission, who praised the platform as a “natural and successful†milestone in technological progress. He expects this initiative to spread nationwide.
