"Player One" is directed by Steven Spielberg. The film revolves around an online game called "The OASIS," which is a virtual world brimming with nostalgia for the 1980s. The novel depicts the world in 2045, when Earth's population has exploded, energy resources have been depleted, and the real world is ugly and rundown. Only a small percentage of people are wealthy; the rest live in poverty. The only escape from the harsh reality of poverty is through the Hall of Fame created by James Halliday – after Halliday's passing, he left behind a final game for millions of players to compete for his vast fortune – whoever finds the hidden "Easter egg" buried in "The OASIS" can inherit his immense wealth.
But besides the hundreds of millions of players vying for these Easter eggs, there’s also the IOI organization, which has its eyes on this fortune. They even go so far as to send death threats to the male protagonists.
Wade, however, decides to join players from all over the world in this game of "The OASIS," attempting to uncover one of the clues hidden within the game.
Parzival (Wade’s name in the game) and his close allies have never met in person: his admiration for Art3mis (real name Olivia Cooke), Aech (real name Lena Waithe), and the network-savvy I-R0k (real name TJ Miller). Their greatest adversary is Nolan Sorrento (real name Ben Mendelsohn from "Rogue One").
