On August 21, reports from the U.S. indicated that a group of technical experts, including representatives from SpaceX, the renowned American space exploration company, and Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, recently issued a warning urging the United Nations to take notice of potential dangers posed by autonomous weapons.
In an open letter addressed to the United Nations, 116 founders and CEOs of robotics and AI companies called for a ban on what they termed "killer robots." They expressed their concerns, stating, "These machines could become instruments of terror. Dictators and terrorists might exploit them to harm innocent civilians and misuse them in countless other harmful ways. We do not have much time. Once this Pandora's Box is opened, it will be nearly impossible to close it again."
This letter was released by the Institute for Future Life, an organization dedicated to ensuring that future technologies benefit humanity. The experts who signed the letter applauded the United Nations for establishing the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE), which focuses on lethal autonomous weapon systems. However, their initial meeting, planned for Monday, has been postponed until November.
Ryan Gariepy, founder and CEO of Clearpath Robotics and one of the signatories, remarked, "Many prominent companies and individuals have joined us in signing this letter because we believe this is not just speculation—it’s a serious, urgent matter that demands immediate action."
Musk has consistently shown concern over how artificial intelligence is being utilized, fearing its misuse. Recently, he emphasized that the security risks posed by AI are more alarming than those from North Korea's nuclear arsenal. He urged governments to implement regulations to prevent any potential threats. "No one enjoys regulation," Musk stated, "but anything that poses a risk to the public—cars, planes, food, medicine—is regulated, and AI should be no different."
