As part of the efforts to accelerate fee reductions outlined during the Two Sessions, China Telecom announced earlier this year that it would fully implement the cancellation of domestic long-distance and roaming charges for mobile phones starting October 1. However, the good news came sooner than expected! Chairman Yang Jie of China Telecom revealed today that the company will eliminate domestic long-distance and roaming fees for mobile phones as of September 1—fully one month ahead of the deadline set by the State Council. This move is expected to benefit approximately 80 million users, reduce internet tariffs by 1230 ten thousand yuan, and lower international and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan roaming charges, providing savings for 26 million users.
Yang Jie also highlighted China Telecom’s significant investments in infrastructure development over the past two years, totaling more than 230 billion yuan. These efforts have resulted in impressive improvements in network performance. Broadband access speeds have doubled consecutively for two years, increasing by 131% and 95.6%, respectively, reaching a 3.65-fold improvement overall. The average broadband access rate now exceeds 50Mbps, while the average cost per unit of broadband has fallen by 59% and 54.9% over the last two years, representing an overall decline of 81%. In terms of mobile data, the average access speed has surged from 3.1 Mbps to 150 Mbps, with some areas already offering speeds of 300 Mbps. Additionally, the average cost per unit of mobile data has dropped by 33% and 36.6% consecutively, resulting in a cumulative decrease of 57.4%.
These changes reflect China Telecom’s commitment to improving user experience and fostering digital inclusion across the country. As a result, consumers can expect not only more affordable services but also faster connectivity, further accelerating the digital transformation of both individuals and businesses.
